Swallownest Loft Conversion

August 1st, 2010

This property is undergoing a loft conversion where the existing hip roof is being changed to a gable with the new dormer side formed as part of the gable construction. We were able to change from a hip to a gable even though the other side remains a hip style because planning permission was not needed as the total volume was under 50 cubic metres.

Having stripped out the existing loft it was discovered that the chimney breasts in the house had been removed but the stack at roof level had not been properly supported. It can be seen that only timber wedges have been used, a new piece of steel has now been designed to comply with current building control.
